Skype is most popular applications for communication via Text, Audio and Video. You can make online free audio and video calls over the internet. It is cross-platform, available on Android systems, Windows, Linux, and macOS. In this article we will explain how to install Skype on Debian 10.
Skype is not an open-source application hence the standard Debian repositories does not includes it. Skype can be install using a snap package or as a .deb package from the Skype repositories.
Install using Snap
The Skype snap package is maintaining by Microsoft. It is very straightforward to install and upgrade via snap package. Snaps are software packages and includes the binary all dependencies need to run the application.
Since the Snap comes pre-installed latest versions of Debian, so we do not need to install it. However, If you are using an older version, then run the following to install Snap:
sudo apt-get install snapd
Now run the below command to install Skype snap package on your system:
sudo snap install skype --classic
That’s it. Skype is installed now on your Debian system, and ready to use it.
The Skype package will be automatically update in the background when new release is available.
Installing Skype with apt
The official Microsoft Apt repositories providing Skype package. Follow the below steps to install it as root or user with sudo privileges:
1. Download latest Skype
First, you have to download the latest Skype .deb package using wget command:
wget https://go.skype.com/skypeforlinux-64.deb
2. Install Skype
Once the download is complete, install Skype using below command:
sudo apt install ./skypeforlinux-64.deb
It may prompt you to enter password.
When a new version is released, update the Skype package run the following command on your terminal:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

I do have a 32bit computer but the skypeforlinyx has -64 in its name. I’m affraid that that means 64bit?
Will it work on my 32bit computer?
For Linux users, Skype is only available for 64 bit OS.
