How to Install Sublime Text 3 on Debian 9

Sublime Text is one of the most popular, powerful and widely used text editor today. It is used for web and software development. You also can make it more powerful by installing Sublime Text plugins. In this tutorial, described how to install Sublime Text on Debian 9 system.

Prerequisites#

Before you start Sublime Text 3 installation on Debian system, Make sure you are logged in as a non-root user with sudo privileges.

Install Sublime Text on Debian#

To install Sublime Text 3 on your Debian system follow the below steps:

First of all, you should update the apt package list by typing:

sudo apt update

Next, you should install necessary dependencies for fetching packages from https sources:

sudo apt install apt-transport-https ca-certificates curl software-properties-common

Import GPG key of the repository using following curl command:

curl -fsSL https://download.sublimetext.com/sublimehq-pub.gpg | sudo apt-key add -

After that add the Sublime Text apt repository to your system using below command:

sudo add-apt-repository "deb https://download.sublimetext.com/ apt/stable/"

Once the repository enabled again update the package index list:

sudo apt update

Finally, Execute the below command to install Sublime Text 3:

sudo apt install sublime-text

That’s all. Sublime Text is installed on your Debian system and ready to use.

Start Sublime Text#

You can start Sublime Text using your system terminal by typing subl or your can launch from Applications -> Sublime Text menu.

When you launch Sublime Text first time it will look like as below:
